Making Plans for March Break? We’ve Got Some Ideas!

There is always plenty to discover in our beautiful province of Ontario. Whether you’re looking to take a day trip or spend a few nights away, there’s tons of fun to be had for all the family. We’ve got seven top ideas for you that don’t involve hopping a flight. Let’s get started!

1. Blue Mountain

It could be your last chance to take advantage of some snow so why not head up to Blue Mountain. There is a huge variety when it comes to activities and lots of accommodation options. Featured March Break events include a backstage concert, a Family Channel lip sync contest, and lots of on-hill events. Bonus, if you have someone to watch the kids you can even hit the heavenly Scandinave Spa for a little R&R.

2. Horseshoe Valley

Another fantastic nearby option for snowsports and other outdoor adventures is Horseshoe Valley Resort. With a nice variety of accommodation and dining options, this resort is a little less vast than Blue Mountain. However, there are still tons of activities to enjoy including tubing, snowshoeing, and mini snowmobiling. Oh, and the Family S’More Station is a must after a hard day on the slopes!

3. Muskoka

There are so many fantastic places to stay in Muskoka, including some that offer special March Break packages. There’s Bayview Wildwood Resort in Port Stanton, Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, and the JW Marriot in Minett, to name just a few. And as far as activities go, if you and the family love getting outside you won’t be disappointed. There’s ice fishing, horse drawn sleigh rides, and ice climbing adventures, just to name a few. And if you’re thrill-seekers, Muskoka is home to one of Ontario’s largest networks of snowmobile trails, so you’re all set to have an endless adrenaline rush!

4. Algonquin

For the even more ambitious out there, you can venture even farther north to the breathtaking Algonquin Provincial Park. The adventure experiences by Voyageur Quest look to offer up a real winter treat for the whole family to enjoy and include dog sledding, wolf howling, and more. Alternatively, there are plenty of accommodations available from which you can plan your own trip. You might think of Algonquin as a summer retreat, but you’ll soon discover winter reveals a whole new world.

5. Niagara Falls

There’s fun to be had in and around Niagara Falls all year round, and March Break is no different. Aside from the falls themselves, there’s the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory, the Skylon Family Fun Centre, and neighbouring picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake. With so many accommodation and dining options you could stay a night or the whole week. You could even squeeze in a trip to Great Wolf Lodge or Waves Indoor Waterpark for splashes of fun for all the family. If you happen to be around on St. Patrick’s Day, don’t forget to check out the falls illuminated in green!

6. St. Jacobs

There is so much to discover in beautiful St. Jacobs, especially at this time of year.  You can head out for the day or find nearby accommodation and explore delights such as Maple Sugar Bush Tours, Waterloo Central Railway, and famous antiques markets. You’ve also got the gorge and quaint village of Elora not too far away. And, of course Cambridge has plenty to offer including the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory (check out BugFeast if you’re not too squeamish) and Springbank Farm’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

7. Staycation

If you’d rather not venture too far from home, a staycation might be just what you need. There’s always lots to do in Etobicoke including Fantasy Fair, Centennial Park Conservatory, and Montgomery’s Inn. Be sure to also check Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation for lists of March Break events. And of course there are special events being held for March Break in downtown Toronto, including Wizard World Fun Park at Exhibition Place, the ROM’S Big Blue March Break, and nine days of drop-in fun at the AGO. If you’re willing to go just a little further, there is also Black Creek Pioneer Village (kids are free over March Break) and the Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festivals at four different locations, none of which are too far away to make for a perfect day trip!

Happy March Break planning from your Thompson Sells team!
